I finished book 1 today. I haven't decided whether I like or dislike the book yet, but it was interesting. I think of the 3 characters I like Alyosha and Ivan the most. I admire Ivan for his intelligence, and Alyosha for his faith in god. I don't really care for Dmitry or for Fyodor very much. Dmitry seems too irresponsible, as the author said. As for Fyodor, I detest him. He abandoned all of his children at young ages, was an alcoholic, and seemed to want everyone to know his problems. Unlike many other books from school, I do want to continue reading.
Yes, Fyodor is a very disgusting character. I believe the author wants to create the kind of responses you had. One thing Dostoevsky wants us to think about is the role of fathers. What responsibilities do they have?
Alyosha is probably the best of the brothers because he was really the only one that kind of got along with his dad. Plus the fact that he couldn't stand to hear obscene sayings gave a really good background to his character...but the scene was kind of funny. And you forgot about Gregory Bobby...he was the best.
You almost have the same views that i have. The only thing i disagree on is Ivan, i think he is stubborn. I don't think he cares much for his father as his brother Alyosha does. On the other hand I could be thinking of Dmitry, im not sure.
I agree with you-- my least favorite characters are Dmitry and Fyodor also. Fyodor is a little odd though. He realizes that he is wicked and that nobody likes him (except for Alyosha).
