Should the U.S. have intervened in Rwanda?

Genocide is bad, incidentally.

I think the US should have intervened in Rwanda, only to prevent genocide and help refugees escape.

I think the key in this issue is the difference between genocide and run-of-the-mill civil war. I don't believe the US should intervene in conflicts within other countries. Civil war is a war between two groups of people in one country. Genocide is the systematic extermination of one group by another.

In the Rwandan genocide, I think the US should have taken action to stop genocide and help people escape. (Really, the UN should have done that, but whatever.)

agreed, the U.N were just peace keepers so they had no point on being there

Thats a good point, technically if the UN was doing their job we wouldnt have any guilt about not going in there because it really wasnt our duty. But we seem to make it our duty to help every other country and its not fair that we just let this one go on without any help from the US.

I don't understand why the UN didn't help. I don't know if they were cowards or genuinely didn't give a flying piece of monkey feces. The United Nations is here to bring peace, not watch hundreds of thousands being slaughtered and just stand by. How about you keep peace by actually doing something. >:C

We shouldn't have had to intervene, it wasn't our mess to clean up, the reason people hate the U.S.A today is because of Iraq, Korea, and Vietnam, those are all messes we shouldn't have had to take care of but we did anyway. It was Belgium's problem and they should have taken care of it. The most we should have done was just put pressure on them to do it.

According to the UN website, after Rwanda they created an office to prevent genocide. So... that's great. I'm sure all the Rwandans who died while the UN sat by appreciate that.

*Sigh...........................................*
It's a bit late, wouldn't you say?

It shouldn't have been created after the fact. If they had notions of potential Tutsi and Hutu tensions, the office should have been established beforehand.
