Title: The color purple

Author: Alice Walker

DOB: 2/9/1944

DOD: ?

Publication Date: 1982

Setting: Early 1900s in the rural south.

Theme: For women to stand up and be strong.

Plot: Celie our main character has been abused by many different people in her life and throughout the movie, with the help of her friends, she finds strength to stop the abuse from others.

Characters:

Celie: (Protagonist) Abused, was married to Mr.

Mr.: (Antagonist) Abused Celie and is in love with Shug

Nettie: (P) Missonary in Africa and Celie's younger sister

Millie: (A) Mayor's wife and made Sofia her maid

Shug Avery: (P) Slept with Mr. and is a dancer

Celie's Father: (A) Cruel and was abusive to Celie

Symbols: The color purple. It stood for hope. And, at the end of the movie the little girl who ran along side of the train stood for Celie returning to her childhood the time where she actually was happy.

Distinguishing Characteristics: The movie showed the hardships that women have had to face to over come sexism and abuse. Although, women everywhere are abused still today.

Personal Response: I like this movie overall. Even though, it was really sad to know that women do go through what Celie went through. I wish we didn't live in a world where abuse exsists but, we do. I hope that women who do watch this movie, learn from it and prevent themselves from being abused like Celie.
