We find out some very important things in this book. Aloysha finds out about Dmitry and Ivan's secret-- Ivan wants Dmitry to try and escape from prison and Dmitry doesn't know if he wants to because even though he's not guilty, Dmitry feels he should "cruicify" himself for the sins of another man. Aloysha also findso out that Lise doesn't want to marry him anymore, because she wants someone who will break her heart. Katerina has a letter written by Dmitry that will condemn him, but she doesn't know if she wants to show it at court tomarrow or not. Ivan feels responsible for the murder because he stepped aside and left town even though he guessed what was going to happen. We find out who the true murderer is --- Smerkyadov. He confesses everything to Ivan, about how he faked and eptilepc fit and then framed Dmitry. He claims that Ivan is the true murderer because he was the one who really wanted Fyodor dead. Ivan gets mad and claims he's going to turn Smerkyadov into the authorites, but once Ivan gets home, he starts to go crazy and is hallucinating that there is a stranger in the room-- the devil. Ivan talks to the devil and finds that the devil is just the evil part of himself. It's probably just an inner stuggle Ivan is having with himself about God , his guilt and right/wrong. At the end of this book, Aloysha comes and tells Ivan that Smerykadov hung himself.
