This course is designed to enhance reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. One of the goals of this class is to make connections between learning in class and students’ everyday lives. The content is aligned with the Common Core Standards. Reading and writing will occur on a daily basis, and units will conclude with a formal assessment. Students will study basic English mechanics and grammar in writing and acquire testing strategies for better standardized test scores.

English 9 includes instruction in literature, grammar, speaking, listening and writing. The textbook exposes the student to a wide variety of authors and genres. The course is designed to develop critical reading, thinking, and writing skills. In addition, the Accelerated Reader Program allows the students to read modern texts while strengthening comprehension.Overall, the class will focus on the various forms of expression and the analysis of literature. It will as well prepare students for the Michigan Merit Exam.

Reading and writing will occur on a daily basis, and units will conclude with a formal assessment.

The goal of English Language Arts 12 is to refine, apply, and extend the solid foundation of knowledge, skills, and strategies developed in English Language Arts 9 through 11. Using the lens of leadership skills, students will develop a world of genre, including an emphasis on non-fiction reading. Students will synthesize information, ideas, and themes to understand the past, the present, and to think innovatively about the future. They will identify and apply their own leadership skills and prepare for responsible action as American citizens in the context of a global world. This course includes a research paper, a related project, and a presentation.
