Born: February 4, 1944 in Georgia

Book Published: 1985.

Settings: It started on a plantation in the South and ended up moving to other locations within the town.

Theme: The theme of the movie was basically that, if you stand up for yourself, you can make your life better. Do not let anyone push you around.

Plot: A black woman is treated unfairly her entire life and is, at first, afraid to stand up for herself. However, in the end, she gains enough courage to do just that and betters her life.

PROTAGONISTS:

Celie: Oldest sister, abused whole life, timid, shy

Netti: Younger sister, outgoing, loves people

Olivia: Celie's daughter, lives in Africa

Adem: Celie's daughter., lives in Africa

Shug Avery: Outspoken, unruly

Sofia: Punished for her outspoken behavior

ANTAGONISTS:

Johnson: Harsh, rude, mean

Father: Abusive and a rapist

Symbols: The color purple was used in the movie to represent courage, God, and hope. It could also have been used to represent justice. The little girl in the end of the movie was used to represent Celi's childhood innocence.

Distinguishing Characteristics: The movie reflected upon the times of unfair treatment of when African American women were mistreated and often abused simply because they had little money. It also shows, however, that if we all stand together to fix a problem that affects as a whole, we can achieve anything.

Response: I truly liked the movie. It was accurate and I like the important details that were shown in the film. It was easy to follow and women everywhere can relate to it especially because inequality against women is still experienced in parts of the world today.
