Book Number 2

Book 2 was actually worse then book 1, if that was even possible.

Fyodor makes a fool of himself, as always. Just being a rude idiot. Peter and Fyodor bicker back and forth, both acting like complete idiots. The elder quotes biblical scriptures and past visits left and right. Its extremely annoying having most of book 2 being about him and his "Wisdom". Being a member of the Left Hand Path, this book was extremely hard to read. Most of the book could have been taken out without getting rid of anything important. Everyone crying at his feet, praising him, asking him this and that...all meaningless filler. This meaningless filler could of been replaced with one person asking for help. It was way too dragged out!

Ivan alot dumber then i thought. Unless i misread something ((probably did...)), he is trying to make the state serve the church? I mean, how dare the church even expect the state to change its laws in order to coinside with the church. The state represents the combined thoughts of the majority. The church represents the combined thoughts of the minority!!! Father Paisii seems a little bit of a moron as well. He is blinded by his own faith, and therefore not even following his own faith.

These people have to realize (as well as millions more) that the religion they follow and believe in is a religion! Religions are based on faith, not facts. Mere opinions shared by a group of people. That is all.

As someone from the Left Hand Path, it is extremely difficult to continue reading this book. There is no joy in it what-so-ever. If i was a criminal, and my only punishment was that i wouldnt get into "Heaven", then there is no reason for me not to commit more crimes. Physical punishments are more effective, in my opinion. But, everyone has thier own opinions.

My part in this discussion is currently over, before i start ranting uncontrollably, which would be extremely bad seeing my personal opinions and the opposite opinions of the rest of the audience. lol

Hope the rest of you like this book, because i HATE it. It is extremely horrible in every way possible. I cannot think of one way it would be enjoyable. Anyone who DOES enjoy this book should reply to this stating the reason you believe it is enjoyable. Maybe that way, it wont haunt my summer.

Some students are actually enjoying this text. Read my commentary about the book. Give it a little more time. You do hit on some crucial issues - religion, Ivan's discussion, fyodor's behavior. Keep going and watch a movie in between.

Hey Marcus!

So I did very much agree with you about the 1st Book. However, I liked the 2nd book a lot more. I could connect to the ideas discussed in the Ivan and Zosima's argument. I just returned from Christian Workcamp in Mississippi and I met people who were struggling with faith as Ivan is and I  met people who were solid in their faith similar to Zosima, who although very solid is not always enough of a realist. I think that crime may be sloved the way Zosima says but it would not work with everyone, b/c not everyone cares what a unknown being thinks about them. But i don't think that  the church,( and keep in mind i am Catholic and even though the Catholc church has had many problems) I don't think that the church could morally use its respoosiblity to the people to punish them for cirmes. Ok so i guess all i was say was that i found this book interesting b/c it gave me something to think about.

Sorry you hated it!:(

lol, hey tori

Its nice hearing the viewpoint of someone who enjoyed book 2 because they could relate to it and connect to it. Putting myself in your shoes does help me better understand how ivan and the elder are feeling and explain why they are acting the way they are. What you said made me change the way i read the book. I kind of changed "christianity" with "My Religion" and it helps. Thanks for your comment, hopefully it will help make the remainder of this LONG book easier to read.

Btw - hope your enjoying your summer!!! big grin
