Well, In book twelve Dmitri goes on trial for his father's murder. He has a big time lawyer defending him and pretty much all of Russia goes to watch the outcome of the trial. Ivan has gone insane. He tells the jury that it's his fault for the murder because he knew that Smerdyakov was going to kill him. He always feels the need to tel everyone that the devil visits him every night. Kirrillovich tries saying that Dimitri had a motive to kill his father and Smerdyakov did not and tries to convince the court that Dimitri should be punished just to set an example. Fetyukovich says how stupid that is and it seems as if he's going to be set free. But, the jury comes back and says that Dimitri is guilty.
