1) Ivan is so appalled by the injustice of our suffering world that he offers an alternative through the Legend of the Grand Inquisitor. How does Ivan suggest that the problem of suffering could be alleviated through the Grand Inquisitor and the priests of the church?
He says they should take away peoples' freedom and give them structure.
2) The Grand Inquisitor believes that Jesus does not understand human beings. Explain Jesus' "misunderstanding."
He thought that Jesus judged mankind incorrectly, and that man turned out differently than how He expected and didn't obey Him. This Grand Inquisitor isn't very intelligent.
3) How does the Grand Inquisitor suggest that the church can relieve the human's "burden of freedom"?
By taking away freedom and replacing it with order, structure, and rules to be followed. He thinks man can only be happy with a set of rules to obey. Intriguing thought.
4) Why is suffering the price of freedom? Well when you have freedom and you make your own choices, you're not always going to make the right choices. And when you make choices, there will always be consequences. And suffering. And that is the price of freedom.
