Niccolo Machiavelli

by Ligia Ciobanu -
Machiavelli think that qualities such as generosity are not desirable in a ruler because it would lead to loss of power. I think that a ruler should be generous but to a certain level because you dont want a ruler that only thinks about himself and when it comes to everyone else he dosen't care. I think it depends on how you look at that word. He also belives that a ruler should rise to power on his own merits and with his own arms. I agree because it kind of shows that he is better fit to be a ruler but then again it depends on how he rises to power...

I strongly agree with both what Machiavelli and Ligia feel the government should have absolute power but  to a certain extent when it comes to the lives of the citizens and their freedom. But a ruler shouldn't show the qualities that are generous and kind because not only because of the loss of power, but also because acting this way will take their mind off of their original intent of being a strong and helpful leader. Also sharing powers with other people and not having a complete and total monarchy are in his beliefs.

There should definitely be government in place and it holds an important role in society. The govermnet provides rules and regulations and without them society would collapse.  They should not have complete power. The people should have a say. The government should be there to enforce laws amd help to guide the people.

Rousseau:  The bad part of the modern age government is that the government is given too much power.  I disagree with have representatives to represent the will of the people.  The will of the people should not be able to be decided by a representative.  What they feel is correct might not be what is right.  The good part of the modern age government is that the people are voicing their opinions.  For example, the protest against the building of the community center near Ground Zero.  If they disagree with the government, they should voice their opinions. One thing I would change is to give more power to the people.  They should be the ones to make rules for the public good.  It will decrease the chances of rebellion.

Goverment and politics are doing a fine job....... if you like eating the dirt! what we need right now is stability and to push our resources tword keeping our economy alive. Why are we supporting haiti when it has absolutly nothing we want. its just a place where if need be we can use as a goverment shield. we go to war, they hold them off. More friends the better but what can they offer. we should focus on our positon as a contrubuting member of the world economy and not throw money away getting so country near by to say "yes, i will be your ally!"  Locke: but people need help and as human beings we all should help. we are all born loving and caring so we should help =>. How bout not, we need to help ourselfs before others!

I disagree, I think it was good for us to support Haiti because they really needed it. If your house blew up and you didn't have money to fix it, you'd want someone to help you even though you couldn't help them in return. thoughtful

Also if other countries saw that we were willing to help others they'd be more willing to help us if we needed it.

I feel that the government is doing an okay job. I feel that they have many areas that they can improve. The government to me has too much power. I think that the people should have more power and that the government should try to work better in trying to stop the spending deficit. The deficit is one trillion dollars more than it was than our biggest ever. They need to find a way to decrease it.

I think that government plays a very important role in modern society, but I think that the governemnt is by the people and for the people. All people should be equal and free to do what they want as long as it does not hurt others.

That's true, I feel that if government has too much control the people will revolt as opposed to people making the decisions.approve

Hobbes: Even though people are born with what Locke would refer to as "inalienable rights", these rights must be abandoned in order to maintain structure and security within society. Though of course I would prefer it otherwise, people are naturally inclined to hurt one another for the sake of their own survival. The individual is malicious and must be restrained by a governing force greater then itself. A government is necessary to extingquish the squall that is human reason in order to develop some level of lasting peace in a community. For this reason a government, particularly through a king or dictator, must rule with complete, unquestionable authority so that there are no grey areas or exceptions in the law and order of the land. Though supporters of democracy proclaim that one man is too easily corruptible to be given so much power, I would reply with the fact that many men are that much more corruptible. In summary, modern society must become a unitary system to ensure clarity and understanding between all. It is better to have one strong voice that causes harm to ensure security, then many small voices that will inevitably lead to confusion.

what i totally think about the government now is that they are FINALLY getting something done. i mean, when did anyone ever suggested that people should get health care? it was the greatest thing i've ever heard in my life. but in truth, most people today in politics, shouldn't worry about what the Pres did or didn't do, they should start thinkin about others. we are the people for cryin out loud! SOMEBODY gots to do something! i say the goverment today is a so-so.

the government is good but flawed. some of the rules that they make are well intentioned but but lack common sense. they do things without thinking past the original reason that they make the rule.in the 20's they outlawed a government regulated product that many people bought and the govnt made money from. they want to stop alcoholism. then people turned around and bought it illegally skyrocketing the illegal sale and traffic of booze therefore indirectly funding the mafia.

LOCKE: In my opinion, the government has to much power.  They could improve on a lot of stuff.  They are doing a decent job.  The people should be more involved with the government which would make the government not have as much power.  The people should have "Inalienable" rights.  Property is the most important right and the government is in to much control of it.  I believe that people have the natural ability to govern themselves. I speak for freedom.  I can change it by fighting for the people and fighting against the government.

Montesquieu- the legislative, executive, and judical powers should be separate like they are today. keeping each other in check to prevent any bracnh from becoming too powerful. The government should always maintain law and order, political liberty and the property of the individual. The good is there is no Monarchy in the united states. The Bad there is less fear of war and violence, the violence has increased.

Re: The state of modern society

Kris, i totally agree with you. nobody isn't afraid about the war anymore, but they never have the time to get the people who starts violence everywhere off the streets. there's a good and bad thing about jail. good: you get the bad guys off the streets. bad: they're bound to get out and do it again. plus, jail is like another home to them. so where's the punishment in that?
