Additional Notes on the Holocaust

  • The Holocaust 1933-1945

  • 11,000,000 dead; 6,000,000 of which were Jews.  Others included Hitler's political opponents, homosexuals, gypsies, Jehova's Witnesses and other "undesirables"

  • The S.S. St. Louis (1939):  The ship left Europe carrying approximately 1,000 Jewish refugees who had made arrangements to immigrate to Cuba.  When the St. Louis arrived in Cuba, the Cuban government went back on their promise and the vast majority of Jews were not permitted to enter the country.  The Jewish refugees then set course for the United States, but the U.S. would not take them in either.  As a result, the ship had not choice but to return to Europe.  The vast majority of of the Jews on board the St. Louis were eventually captured and killed during the Holocaust.

  • The nation of Israel was created by the United Nations in 1948 as a homeland for Jews.
