Technology is not computers or gadgets or stuff.
Technology has always been the way we express the thinking process. Computers; television; motion pictures; radio; books; writing; cave painting; hashmarks in the sand to count sheep; are all technologies. All reflect the society that spawned them and all helped to shape those societies.
Since 1985 when computers became personal, they have influenced how we think, and how we express what we think. The past quarter century has changed us all--we use computer technology all the time, automatically, behind the scenes, without thinking about it.
We've arranged a civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology.
Carl Sagan
